We wisten het in het voorjaar van 2015 al maar uiteindelijk bevestigde Diageo het pas twee weken geleden. De Diageo Special Releases 2016 zijn; Auchroisk 25yo (51,2%), Port Ellen 37yo (55,2%), Caol Ila 15yo Upneated (61,5%), Lagavulin 12yo (57,7%), Brora 38yo (48,6%), Cambus 40yo (52,7%), Cragganmore NAS (55,7%), Glenkinchie 24yo (57,2%), Linkwood 37yo (50,3%), Mannochmore 25yo (53,4%).

Brora 38yo 1977 (48,6%)

De oudste Brora ooit door Diageo gebotteld in de Special Release serie. Gedistilleerd in 1977 en gerijpt in refill American oak en European oak. Gebotteld op 48,6% als limited release van 2984 flessen.

“Very easy to drink at natural strength: cool, smooth and slightly waxy, with lemon peel and rising wood ash above sweet, coating, caramel. Sweet and fragrant. Depth and complexity emerge together as lightly spicy smooth tannins and a minty, peaty pungency develop. Water silkily increases the well-balanced sweetness and seductive spice and adds a venerable air.”

Cambus 40yo 1975 (52,7%)

Een 40 jaar oude Lowlands single grain van de in 1993 gesloten Cambus distilleerderij. Gedistilleerd in 1975 en gerjipt in bourbon vaten alvorens als limited release van 1812 flessen te zijn gebotteld.

“On the nose it’s surprisingly lively, quickly mellowing to sweetness. Clean, fruity top-notes of ripe red apples, pineapple and cape gooseberry rise above a wide-ranging, softly sweet melange of boiled and soft-chew strawberry sweets, shortcrust pastry and milk chocolate with smooth, succulent toffee.”

Caol Ila 15yo 2000 Unpeated Malt (61,5%)

Net als bij voorgaande releases een 15 jaar oude unpeated release van Caol Ila. Gedistilleerd in 2000 en gebotteld op 61,5% als limited release van een paar duizend flessen.

“Challenging and perhaps too powerful to really appreciate at natural strength, yet essentially fresh, light and spirited, with a sweet taste overall. There’s cooling menthol, sharp fruit, then lots of malt and toffee. Much more accessible when reduced with water, the taste now soft, lightly sweet and succulent; the fruity sweetness balanced by salt and slightly sour (as with bitter lemons).”

Cragganmore NAS (55 ,7%)

Een No Age Statement malt van Cragganmore en de zesde release van deze Highlands distilleerderij in de special releases.

“A smooth texture, with a sweet start; sugary and intense, with fragrant fondant in the mid-palate. Soon, becoming more drying; cedary and aromatic, although still unctuous. Slowly developing beautiful notes of cocoa and liquorice, then growing savoury, with porcini and a little salt.”

Glenkinchie 24yo 1991 (57,2%)

Een 24 jaar oude Lowlands single malt en een van de oudste ooit gebotteld van Glenkinchie in de Special Releases serie. Gedistilleerd in 1991 en gebotteld als limited release van 5928 flessen.

“The nose opens to reveal clearly defined floral, fruit and cereal aromas that with water become more indulgent, while on the palate there’s complexity and a wonderfully drying, aromatic and bittersweet finish.”

Lagavulin 12yo (57,7%)

De welbekende 12 jaar oude Lagavulin op vatsterkte die dit jaar tevens dient als special release ter ere van het 200 jarige bestaan van de distilleerderij.

“Wonderfully smoky, oily and bitter-sweet, pure in style and beautifully balanced with an inspiring sophistication and as much at home with food as after-dinner, being lighter in aroma and texture and less drying than recent expressions.”

Linkwood 37yo 1978 (50,3%)

Een 37 jaar malt van een distilleerderij die zelfs nauwelijks bottelingen heeft uitgebracht. Gedistilleerd in 1978 en nu gebotteld als limited release van 6114 flessen.

“Displaying typical fresh fruit and floral characters in its slow desire to be approachable, the nose yet gives no hint to the wonderful elegance and complexity evident on the palate and in the finish of this sophisticated malt.”

Mannochmore 25yo 1990 (53,4%)

Een 25 jaar oude Speyside single malt van Mannochmore. Gedistilleerd in 1990 en gerijpt in Europees eiken alvorens te zijn gebotteld als limited release van 3954 flessen.

“Smooth textured and coating, the taste starts hot and sweet, with suggestions of burnt orange peel, vanilla toffee and creamy coffee. Becoming fragrant and floral, as orange oil and Turkish delight appear, set against a charred and compelling burnt pastry bitterness and a rising oaky dryness.”

Port Ellen 37yo 1978 (55,2%)

De 16e Port Ellen release in de serie en met 37 jaar de oudste van allen. Gedistilleerd in 1978 en gerijpt in refill American oak en European oak. Gebotteld op 55,2% als limited release van 2940 flessen.

“Sophisticated and understated; dry overall, opening with distant, faint smoke, before a wave of familiar sweet and smoky notes, among which hints of hessian and warm wood are all that suggest great age.”
