Ondanks Covid-19 loopt bij Diageo alles in lijn om al vroeg, half september, de Special Releases 2020 uit te brengen. Acht nieuwe releases van Diageo’s distilleerderijen met de oude bekende Lagavulin 12yo, een nieuwe Pityvaich release maar bijvoorbeeld ook een nieuwe Talisker 8yo. Talisker 8yo (57,9%)

Twee jaar na de eerste Talisker release in tijden is het ook weer ene 8 jaar oude. Dit keer gerijpt in Pot-still Caribbean rum casks en gebotteld op 57,9%.

Tasting notes: Sweet and maritime top notes on the nose, with hints of molasses and crystalline sugar, dry seaweed, salt and iodine and ‘pear drop’ boiled fruit sweets. The palate is salty and lightly sweet, before the Talisker pepperiness takes over. The finish is hot, peppery and drying, sweet and smoky.

Cardhu 11yo (56%)

Een hele fruitige Cardhu die iets jonger is dan de standaard variant en uiteraard ook cask strength. Gerijpt in refill, new en ex-Bourbon American oak vaten.

Tasting notes: Fruity top notes of green apple, green grape and pineapple on the nose, leading to a hint of lemon peel and a faintly mossy base. The palate has a creamy-smooth texture with a buttery, hot and spicy flavour akin to hot-cross buns. The finish is quite long with some white pepper.

Cragganmore 20yo (55,8%)

Dit keer een oudere Cragganmore met 20 jaar. Gerijpt in refill en fresh-charred casks en gebotteld op vatsterkte van 55,8%.

Tasting notes: A mellow nose with some quiet prickle, deeply wooded with fruity top notes of ripe pear, Ogen melon and green banana. The palate is rich and sweet, balanced by a drying and savoury mid-palate. The finish is long, dry with chilli spice.

Lagavulin 12yo (56,4%)

De aloude bekende Lagavulin 12 years old voor de 20^e keer gebotteld. Gerijpt refill American oak vaten en gebotteld op 56,4%.

Tasting notes: Unusually ashy top notes for Lagavulin on the nose, but with typical linseed oil in time. Fruity notes of boiled sweets, and sea air. On the palate, the flavour is sweeter than expected, smoky with a little sea salt. Long and smoky finish with a salty aftertaste.

Singleton of Dufftown 17yo (55,1%)

Een 17 jaar oude Singleton gerijpt in refill American oak hogsheads en gebotteld op 55,1%.

Tasting notes: Honeycomb, spun honey and a trace of beeswax on the nose. A faint floral note of dried grass or wallflowers underneath. Creamy-smooth palate that is sweet overall, with a drying and slightly coating feel as beeswax reappears. The finish is quite long and warming with white pepper turning to chilli in the aftertaste

Pittyvaich 30yo (50,8%)

Opnieuw een botteling van de gesloten Pittyvaich distilleerderij die weer een jaartje ouder is. Dit jaar een 30 jaar oude release gerijpt in first fill bourbon casks en gebotteld op 50,8%.

Tasting notes: Tops notes of ripe tropical fruits, pear, papaya, pineapple and banana on the nose, leading ton a lightly oily and very smooth palate. Vanilla and fruit acidity, drying lightly on the finish with some lingering spicy warmth.

Mortlach 21yo (56,9%)

Net als vorig jaar is er ook in 2020 een Mortlach release. Dit keer met 21 jaar iets jonger als in 2019. Gerijpt in PX en Oloroso sherry seasoned casks en gebotteld op vatsterkte van 56,9%.

Tasting notes: Rich dried fruits, fresh-baked buttered scones and lime marmalade on the nose, leading to a intense, savoury palate with a ‘kick’ of chilli pepper. Drying overall, with rich tannins. The finish presents fruit and savoury notes.

Dalwhinnie 30yo (51,9%)

De achtste en laatste release is een 30 jaar oude Dalwhinnie. Gerijpt in refill hogsheads en gebotteld op vatsterkte van 51,9% met een oplage van 6978 flessen.

Tasting notes: Sweet and fragrant on the nose with dried herbal notes, subtle butterscotch and boiled sweets. Sweet, spicy, clean and fresh on the palate, with a peppery-spice warmth. The finish is long and warming, but water will cool the heat.
