In 2021 was het wellicht wat dun gezaaid als het om Compass Box specials gaat maar dat zal in 2022 zeker veranderen want de eerste drie releases zijn nu al aangekondigd. Eind maart verwachten we deze Vellichor en de Experimental Grain en in juni verwachten we de tweede Circle release. First things first, de Vellichor.

Vellichor betekent ‘The wishfullness of a second-hand bookshop’ en is een zelfbedacht woord van John Koenig, schrijver van het boek ‘The Dictionary of Obscure Sorrows’.  Een nieuw woord waarvoor ze bij Compass Box een nieuwe smaak gevonden hebben. Die werd gecreëerd door vaten whisky bij elkaar te zoeken alsof je door een tweedehands boekwinkel loopt, op zoek naar dat ene exemplaar dat je nog altijd zoekt. Een smaak die succesvol bereikt werd toen een distilleerderij en bottelaar in het noorden van Schotland vaten met blended whisky aanboden die nu lagen te rijpten op ex-sherry butts.

Deze zijn gecombineerd met volle en rijpe whisky’s van The Macallan, Highland Park en Caol Ila om de whisky variant van Vellichor vorm te geven. Het resultaat is deze limited edition van Compass Box met een oplage van 3246 flessen die in januari van dit jaar gebotteld is op 44,6%, uiteraard non chill filtered en zonder toevoeging van kleurstoffen. Hieronder alvast meer info over het smaak profiel en de gebruikte vaten, nu nog even wachten tot de Vellichor arriveert!

Smaak profiel:

Hints of leather, polished furniture and the crackling dustiness of decades-old pages on the nose. The palate is stacked with sumptuous malty notes, tropical fruit and Sherry character, with a delicate but persistent peatiness.

De inhoud:

The Macallan Distillery – 2 first fill bourbon barrels (12,1%)

Two first fill ex-Bourbon barrels. With its heavyweight texture and glossy aromatics, this is like that coffee table book on stately home garden design you could imagine seeing on the polished oak desk of your piano teacher. An ABV of around 56%.

Highland Park Distillery – 8 recharred hogsheads (38,9%)

Eight recharred hogsheads. Aromas of musky dry leather immediately marked this parcel out as fundamental to the Vellichor project. On the palate this is ridiculously fruity and puts us in mind of lighthearted Victorian poetry read aloud while wassailing. Around 50% ABV.

Blended Scotch Parcel – 1 refill sherry butt (15,6%)

One refill Sherry butt of whisky dubbed ‘Old Orkney’. No connection to the closed Stromness Distillery, this nevertheless made us think of an anthology of Norse mythology, in the kind of chunky hardbacks produced in the early 1990s. Close to 42% ABV.

Blended Malt Parcel – 2 refill sherry butts (29,3%)

Two refill Sherry butts. Heavy cooked fruit and spice notes suggest an inherited, well-thumbed cookbook for desserts and puddings. Around 41% ABV.

Caol Ila Distillery – 1 refill hogshead (4,1%)

One refill hogshead. Beautifully old smoke but still with surprising juiciness – like an eighteenth-century almanac for orchard pruners, kept in the potting shed. Around 46% ABV.
